Vinny Capra, who I assume is someone's cousin, went deep twice for New Hampshire on Sunday. Samad Taylor also hit his ninth home run. Anthony Kay and Paxton Schultz had similarly disappointing starts. Buffalo couldn't recover but Vancouver did. Dunedin were rained out.

Scranton 8 Buffalo 0

New Hampshire 9 Portland 2

Vancouver 12 Spokane 6

Dunedin at Lakeland - postponed

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Anthony Kay cruised through three innings with just two ground ball singles as baserunners. The fourth was a different story. Kay faced eight hitters, recorded two outs, and conceded six runs. He was hit hard, one home run and two doubles. So some good and some bad. Connor Overton pitched 3.1 shutout innings with five K's. As the Jays look for bullpen help, Overton, Hobie Harris, Kirby Snead and Bryan Baker all have a claim for a call up.

The Bisons had only seven hits, Richard Urena was the only hitter with two.

The bottom third of the order came through in this game with six runs scored and six RBI. Vinny Capra went deep twice out of the ninth spot and drove in five runs. Demi Orimoloye had three hits and scored twice. And Chris Bec had one hit and walked three times. Other than the bottom third Samad Taylor hit his ninth home run, added a double, a walk and two stolen bases. C also had two hits.

Portland scored one run off Maximo Castillo in five innings. The bullpen was solid over four innings.

Paxton Schultz's start was like Anthony Kay's. Schultz had just allowed one hit through three innings. But in the fourth went walk, walk home run. That was followed by single, double, home run. Schultz was done after four with six runs in. The C's trailed 6-4 but scored five in the fifth and another in the sixth to pull away. Adrian Hernandez, recently called up from Dunedin, pitched three shutout innings to pick up the win.

Tanner Kirwer led off the game with a single and scored the first run. He added a three run home run in the second. The C's scored five in the fifth, Ryan Gold doubled in two runs, Luis De Los Santos added a two run home run. In total the C's had 16 hits. Gold added a ninth inning home run and drove in four. Eric Rivera had three hits.

Three Stars

Third Star - Ryan Gold

Second Star - Demi Orimoloye

First Star - Vinny Capra

He could be a reliever this year and coming into next spring trying to earn a starting job, what Sanchez did, basically.

The GCL starts in 24 days. I wonder if they'll fill the full roster before the draft.
The Manager is Brent Lavallee, which I don't know anything about.
However, ex-Blue Jays pitcher Zach Stewart is a development coach.

I wonder, with the loss of the short season leagues, will the Jays, and possibly other teams, run 2 GCL teams? If not I guess a ton of players will just stay at instructs the entire summer.

I don't think there are that many players left in instruct. The roster limit for the GCL is 35 players.

Let's see.
J. J. D'Orazio
Estiven Machado
Yhon Perez
Rikelin De Castro
Manuel Beltre
Dasan Brown ?
Joey Murray ?
Eric Pardinho
Edisson Gonzalez
John Aiello
Angel Camacho
Emanuel Vizcaino

Paging Mike Green!

Gabe Moreno-- defense look ok? It appears that the bat can play anywhere, right?
Kevin Goldstein
1:27 Defense is good. Don't move him.

Angel Camacho was released on April 26 according to his player page on milb.com

Thanks, hypobole. I guess I'll have to see him play defence to form my own opinion.

I know there aren't many known names left in instructs right now. But there is a draft coming up, perhaps as many as 40 rounds (I haven't heard the exact length). There could also be names from the '18 and '19 IFA classes that we haven't heard about that could use playing time, plus undrafted free agents.

One GCL team doesn't feel like enough, but maybe teams are just fine with players not getting game action.

If only one GCL team it could be a pretty crazy mix of advanced college players and recent HS and IFA teenagers. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

This years draft is in the middle of July. A lot of the drafted players, particularly the higher drafted ones who are haggling over money, might not sign until August sometime. I don't think many of the high draftees will see much GCL time.
Gerry - Monday, June 14 2021 @ 07:44 PM EDT (#400019) #
The Jays will have one GCL team, the schedule was announced today.

This years draft will be 20 rounds. I cannot find the signing deadline.

Good to have a GCL team. I don't know if I am smart or dumb for wishing for a super young team. Super young will mean a lot of losses most likely.

In 2020 there were those latin players that stayed in Dunedin because they were unable to go home. Those kids received a lot of training, indoors and outdoors. Hopefully it worked. Also that many grew very strong using the great equipment.

I checked. Only 8 teams have 2 rookie league squads, 5 GCL, 3 AZL.

Samad Taylor made BA's June 14 Prospect Hot Sheet:

"14. Samad Taylor, OF/2B, Blue Jays
Team: Double-A New Hampshire (Northeast)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .550/.654/1.100 (11-for-20), 11 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBIs, 6 BB, 4 SO, 2-3 SB

The Scoop: Taylor was a rail-thin middle infielder whose game centered around contact and speed when the Indians drafted him in the 10th round in 2016. After being traded to the Blue Jays in a deal for Joe Smith the following year, Taylor has progressively and surprisingly added more and more power. He showed off his new juice with three more homers for New Hampshire this week. He now has nine home runs in 33 games, tying his career high that he set with Low-A Lansing in 2017—when he played 121 games. Taylor has added that power without sacrificing any of his speed or athleticism. He has played second base, third base, center field and left field this season and is 13-for-15 on stolen bases. (KG)"

George Springer is leading off for Buffalo tonight. SWR struck out the side for NH in the top of the first before the rains came. I think that he's going to Buffalo before long.
greenfrog - Tuesday, June 15 2021 @ 08:10 PM EDT (#400127) #
Springer is 0/2 so far, but Kevin Smith is continuing his torrid hitting in June. So far tonight he's 1/1 with a HR (8) and a walk.

Another home run (9) for Kevin Smith. Now 2/2 with a walk. The Jays have had some breakout performances by their prospects this season. Let's hope Smith can keep it up.

Didn't Kevin Goldstein leave Baseball Prospectus for the Astros?

Kyle Glaser.

And Kevin Goldstein is no longer with the Astros. He's currently a writer for Fangraphs.

Yeah Adams is now officially demolishing AAA and has the glove to play 3B.

Seems like a no brainer. The older Espinal has never hit like this.
greenfrog - Tuesday, June 15 2021 @ 10:43 PM EDT (#400165) #
The Jays would have to weigh the potential benefit to the team against the potential downside of promoting Smith too early. It might be good to keep Smith in AAA for a while to help him consolidate his improvements, especially given the swing changes he’s made in recent seasons.
uglyone - Wednesday, June 16 2021 @ 01:06 AM EDT (#400175) #
Eh he's almost 25 and mashing AAA.

I wouldn't wait too long.
