Buffalo ended its 2022 season on a losing note.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 3 Buffalo 0

Derek Dietrich took Hayden Juenger deep in the second inning and that was all the Yankees affiliate needed. Juenger gave up two hits and two walks and struck out one over 2-1/3 innings to take the loss. Adrian Hernandez stranded a Juenger runner and pitched 1-2/3 innings of shutout ball, whiffing two and walking one. Yosver Zulueta yielded two unearned runs on two walks and hit a batter but struck out two over 1-2/3 innings. Kyle Johnston prevented a Zulueta runner from scoring and put up 2-1/3 shutout frames despite a hit and two walks, striking out one.

The Herd were held to three hits. Luis De Los Santos had a double, a walk and a stolen base. Yoshi Tsutsugo also got aboard twice with a single and a walk. L.J. Talley had the other base hit. Juan Gonzalez drew a walk and stole a base in his Triple-A debut after splitting the season with Dunedin and the Florida Complex League Blue Jays. The Bisons finish the 2022 season with a record of 76 wins and 72 losses, finishing nine games back of the first-place Durham Bulls.

This is the final minor league recap of 2022. It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing these weekly recaps since 2007. Time sure flies, doesn’t it? On behalf of my friend and fellow Irishman Gerry McDonald, thanks a million for reading all season long. Stay tuned as I’m sure Gerry and myself and perhaps a guest or two will get around to putting together the Top 30 Blue Jays prospects list for 2023. You’re also invited to check out csplusbaseball.ca as there are a few more chats in the vault with members of the 2022 Vancouver Canadians that will be posted in the coming weeks. Again, thanks a million for reading. Looking forward to 2023 already but first, the Blue Jays have a World Series to win!

Thanks for putting these together all year. I certainly enjoy reading them.

Thanks a bunch - A lot of time-consuming hard work - since 2007! that's dedication.

Thank you for this and C's Plus Baseball. Thanks also to Gerry.

Many thanks for your time and effort in pulling together these great daily updates throughout the season.

I'm curious about who will remain active as part of the big-league taxi squad. There are no active players left on the 40-man roster (Vinny Capra is hurt); do we keep guys like Lukes and Tsutsugo around in case of an emergency? Does Nate Pearson get an audition in the final week? I assume that Thornton, Merryweather, and maybe Foster Griffin are the extra arms that will stick around? At this point, I don't expect to see Mitch White or Kikuchi on a playoff roster, so there are a couple of openings for relievers.
John Northey - Thursday, September 29 2022 @ 02:07 PM EDT (#423011) #
For round 1 you don't need Kikuchi or White, although Kikuchi might be working his way back into the picture - last 2 games 1 2/3 IP 0 H 0 R 1 BB 3 SO 1 HBP.  Overall since going to the pen 10 games, 13 2/3 IP 16 H 10 R/ER 8 BB 26 SO.  Basically he is the power arm in the pen the Jays have been looking for - a guy who can strike people out when needed.  If he can have 1 or 2 more solid games like his last 2 then he will be on the playoff roster I suspect.

Thornton and Merryweather are not guys who should be high on any list outside of mop up duty.  Griffin is interesting - very good year in AAA - 2.10 ERA over 38 games 51 1/3 IP 40 H 15 BB 57 SO but just 1 game here, and 5 in KC. Just 8 ML innings in his career so far 7 H 7 R 6 ER 5 BB 5 SO 1 HBP 0 HR.  Griffin and Gage are the 2 who I'd look at most for call ups outside of Pearson of course.  Merryweather I have zero confidence in, and Thornton would be useful in a series where the 5th starter slot is needed.

Troy Watson has been added to the AFL roster.

NYM prospect F Alvarez has been promoted to the big club. Great O but his D is not good it seems. Gary Sanchez also had great O but poor D.

The current 3 Cs of NYM are hitting very poorly. This off season they may try to improve at C. Of course maybe their pitchers like the current Cs.

McCann still has 2/24 left on his deal. The 4/40 deal he signed provides an idea of what Jansen might command on the open market, though it's possible Cohen and the Mets were bidding against themselves. Shades of Kikuchi.

Thanks, #2JBrumfield and Gerry for all your work providing recaps of the minor league games. Much appreciated!

I was just thinking (not always a good thing) that the Jays should set up their own intersquad games with top AAA/AA talent to play in October while the Jays play in the playoffs. Keep kids fresh who are the top backups - pitchers like Gage, Thornton, Merryweather, Lawrence, Hatch, Griffin, and Kay (yes, he is on the 40 man still). Plus top prospects who haven't hit their inning limits. Hitters like, well, ummm.... whoever isn't on the playoff roster and whoever would backup ML'ers should someone get hurt. Only 40 man guys not in the majors right now are Vinny Capra and Leo Jimenez, but with Gurriel and Espinal hopefully coming back we'll see Lopez sent down for sure and probably Moreno who has played a total of 4 games since being called up (1-3 with a walk and a K). Yeah, 3rd catchers are rarely used.

<br>the Mets have a top prospect at C even with bad D. They aren't going to try and improve that now.

I'm guessing the Jays feel Moreno's biggest area in need of improvement is game calling, which is tied to a familiarity with the pitching staff in Toronto. How much he plays is mostly irrelevant to this dynamic.

Sitting in on meetings and watching Kirk and Danny navigate opponents lineups will develop him more than a few extra minor league games will.

Good point hypobole about Moreno learning from Kirk and Jansen.

Troy Watson going to the AFL as Gerry said. I just reread the C'Plus interview. FB up to 99. He has 4 pitches. E Pardhino taught him the CU & CH and helped with his SL. He used to be a starter so going forward he may become a bulk pitcher.

There are many pitchers that are moving up in our system. I really hope some can stick.

SWR did well in his debut.

It feels to me like Kirk is the primary catcher and Jansen is the backup now.

I was reading that Boston likes McGuire's defense and think that he will hit if he plays regularly.
I feel that Toronto didn't try hard enough to use Jansen/McGuire as a platoon.
A left hitting catcher should never have to face starting lefties.

Jansen has started 11 of the last 15 games behind the dish and is very clearly the Jays starting C, and rightfully so.

Concur with 92-93. Kirk could be the primary on a lot of teams, but Danny has been terrific.

The Fall League starts today. Tanner Morris is the only Blue Jay in the lineup today.

In yesterdays AFL game Barger got a hit, Britton 2 hits. Pitcher Hunter Gregory did ok in the 3rd inning gave up 1 run. In the 4th he got 2 outs then was replaced by Stephen Jones with the bases loaded. Jones let all 3 runs score. Troy Watson pitched 2 innings and did not give up any runs.

Gregory throws a sinker, cutter, 4 seam and SL.

Barger is getting a lot of playing time and doing very well. T Morris and Z Britton are doing quite well.

Our pitchers are getting little playing time. So cannot evaluate.
