It's the mid season break for the minor leagues too, and I think it comes at a good time. The Jays affiliates are short of pitching, there have been a lot of bullpen games this week. They need to get some of their arms back. And injuries have taken a toll on the hitting side too. Orelvis hasn't been seen in a few days and guys like Josh Kasevich and Peyton Williams are on the IL. In addition to the short term injured, will we see Ricky T and Brandon B soon?

The first half has not been kind to several prospects. With a four day break, can they reset their minds, their approaches to deliver a strong second half? Buffalo were the only winners on Sunday.

Buffalo 8 Rochester 2

New Hampshire 4 Hartford 11

Vancouver 1 Hillsboro 7

Tampa 6 Dunedin 1

Three Stars

Third Star - Casey Lawrence

Second Star - Alan Roden

First Star - Otto Lopez

Boxes

NOTES

Otto Lopez stayed hot heading into the break, he had a three RBI double and a single. Davis Schneider hit his 16th home run, Tanner Morris had three hits.

Casey Lawrence was his usual good self, pitching six innings.

New Hampshire had a bullpen day, and not a good one, with eleven runs allowed. The offense had eight hits, Steward Berroa had two.

For Vancouver Devereaux Harrison did not have a good start, allowing five runs in four innings. Four runs came in the third, with an infield single, a walk and back to back home runs.

Alan Roden and Dasan Brown led off the game with a pair of singles. Roden scored on a sac fly from Alex De Jesus for the C's only run. Roden had two of the C's five hits.

Hyun Jin Ryu and Joey Murray handled five scoreless innings for Dunedin. But the other three pitchers gave up six runs in four innings. The Jays had just three hits.

The Yankees have fired their hitting coach.

Dasan Brown has hit well since the beginning of June after a hellacious April. He has regained control of the strike zone and the power is there too.

Orel is has really turned his season around as well, the BAIP is low, but his strike zone improvements have one of the biggest turnarounds I have ever seen.

Alan Roden is a 3rd round pick who is 23 and 1/2 and has mastered A ball. I don't understand why they haven't moved him up.

I don’t understand why Roden is still in Vancouver. He’s streets ahead of his college brethren in Vancouver in terms of plate approach. They might not be a believer that there’s any power there but that shouldn’t be a reason to avoid a promotion.

Equally (if not more) baffling is the fact that Rafael Ohashi is still in Dunedin. He's been near dominant this season.
Kelekin - Monday, July 10 2023 @ 12:01 AM EDT (#431419) #
Ohashi has been worse in his 3rd go-around at Dunedin than last year. I am not sure I see a 4.84 ERA, 1.4 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9 and 6.7 K/9 as dominant. But I'm sure there's a lot they're working on with him - he's still quite young.

Roden not being promoted is surprising because there isn't much blocking him. Rock and Britton are on the DL, and Will Robertson and Riley Tirotta just aren't it.

I'd like to see them challenge Turconi too, given his age (24) and .908 OPS.

Roden could be a victim of the near lack of hitting talent in Dunedin. There is really no one there worthy of a promotion to replace him other than recently-signed infielder Jeffrey Wehler.

Vancouver also has very little depth with 3 catchers, four infielders and five outfielders with Devonte Brown playing out of position in the infield out of necessity. The Jays lack of depth is impacting many different areas of the org.
Mike Green - Monday, July 10 2023 @ 09:26 AM EDT (#431425) #
If the club isn't promoting an A ball outfielder because they don't have anyone capable of taking his place, that would be quite the indictment of the org. Superannuated low level minor league players are available for next to nothing.

I find that encouraging. It suggests Ryu was pitching relatively well.
Let's bring the next level.

Joey Murray? He looks promising before the pandemic. Was injured in 21, ineffective in 22. Can he finally turn it around?
Marc Hulet - Monday, July 10 2023 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#431433) #
Joey Murray's FB sat 85 mph and touched 87... He threw 8 of 17 pitches for strikes. I'm not sure there is much hope there... He's made 9 appearances so the velo may be what it is...

I think Roden should be promoted to NH. He would be the 2nd youngest OF on the team. S Espino is 5 months younger. Roden's numbers are elite except for the HRs. Orelvis, L Jimenez and D Palmgeiani could be promoted to Buffalo soon IMO.

Maybe player movement starts after the AS break.
