NOTES

Eric Lauer picked up his first win of the season for Buffalo with five shutout innings. The Jays signed Connor Overton yesterday who added three innings. Overton was previously in the Jays system in 2021.

Orelvis Martinez hit his second home run of the season while Steward Berroa went 3-4. Michael Stefanic drove in two runs with two hits.

In New Hampshire CJ Van Eyk went 5.2 innings, good, and struck out nine, also good. But he gave up eight hits, three of which left the yard leading to five runs, thats not so good.

Combined over the two games New Hampshire had six hits, Yohendrick Pinango had three of them. Ryan McCarty hit his first home run.

Vancouver trailed 3-1 headed to the top of the ninth. Jackson Hornung and Adrian Pinto both homered to tie the game. Chay Yeager came on and on his second pitch he gave up a walk off home run. Juaron Watts-Brown needed 81 pitches to get through 4.1 innings. He struck out six and was charged with two runs. Just four hits for the C's.

And four hits as well for Dunedin. Both runs scored via ground ball outs. Austin Cates had a rough start, four runs off six hits. He had just one strikeout.

Catcher Nate LaRue appears to have converted to pitcher. No video from the Yankees A-ball affiliate thanks to the Rays... but nothing eye popping from the data sheets. Fastball was 90-92 mph. Also slider and cutter.

Our first hint at some rookie ball players as OF Dariel Ramon has joined Dunedin as an injury replacement for now. Speedy former infielder, age 19, with a good eye but stands just 5-7, unless he's grown since last year. Spent two years in the DSL.

FCL Jays start a week from Saturday.

Yesavage, 4.2 IP, 1 H, 1BB, 1 ER, 12 K. He and Stephen can both be moved up a level if Jays want.

I don't know if it's actually like this or if it just feels like it, but the Jays seem to be obnoxiously slow with moving players up. It was exciting to see Manoah debut in 2021. They didn't care about weather or experience, they put him in AAA to start the year for a couple of starts and then called him up. This was after the pandemic destroyed the 2020 minor league season so not a typical environment, but still fun to see as a fan. Hopefully we start to see some quick promotions for players who deserve it like Yesavage. It's not like the glacial pace they usually have with prospects has been working to their advantage given the state of the farm, so take some chances.

It was actually 10 Ks not 12.

Despite the success overpowering a lineup batting under .200 as a whole, there is still work for Yesavage to do.

He had little-to-no fastball control. Luckily, his cutter was on and they really struggled to hit the splitter. Until the fifth. He couldn't land his cutter or fastball consistently and they stopped chasing the splitter.

I've noticed, along with the poor fastball command, he seems to rattle easily and things quickly snowball when they go sideways.

I agree he needs to face better pitching; I just don't think he's as advanced as it seems.

I'd expect Stanifer, Batista, and Stephen to survive a promotion more quickly. But Yesavage arguably has the highest long-term ceiling.

BTW, the opposing pitcher also had a no-hitter through five innings and came into the game with an ERA above 9.00.

One of the reasons that the prospects seem to be pushed more slowly by the Jays is that their prospects just haven't been that good. Look at how few they have actually managed to graduate as major leaguers recently and can you really say that any of them were held down too long?

Edward Duran had a nice day today, and has had a good start to the season. He's repeating Dunedin (although not yet 21, so not old for the level), so hopefully he earns a mid-year promotion. He's popped a couple over the fence already, doubling his career total. If he can have even fringy power, that's a significant improvement.

I don't think Jays prospects are pushed slowly at all. Other organizations do exactly the same except with elite prospects we just don't pay attention to how some team is moving their #8 prospect. Jays haven't had elite prospects in a long time. Vlad was in majors at 20. Bo at 21. Manoah barely pitched in minors. If there is a great prospect, Jays will move them quickly. Nimmala is best offensive prospect in a (sadly) long while and Jays have been pretty aggressive promoting him. I expect Yesavage and Stephen will be promoted fairly aggressively as well.

Duran actually has excellent max exit velocities... he just hits too many balls on the ground and can make poor swing decisions leading to a bunch of poorly hit balls.
