I am trying something new. I am posting the MLU before the Vancouver game is played. I will add in the C's game in the morning. On the filed New Hampshire kept on hitting while Dunedin had a hit by pitch, walk off, extra innings win. Vancouver also had an extra innings win but because they are on the road it was not a walk off. Buffalo were rained out.

Buffalo at Rochester - postponed

Chesapeake 6 New Hampshire 12

Vancouver 9 Spokane 7 - 10 innings

Clearwater 7 Dunedin 8 - 10 innings

Three Stars

Third Star - Tucker Toman

Second Star - Daniel Guerra

First Star - Nolan Perry

NOTES

The New Hampshire offense kept the good times rolling with 15 hits and 12 runs. Jace Bohrofen hit the only home run, his fourth in the last four games. Jackson Hornung had three more hits, he is now hitting .375. Promotions don't usually happen this early in the season but Hornung should be on his way back to AAA before too long. However, Hornung and Pinango are somewhat birds of a feather, good contact hitters, not great fielders, and maybe not enough power to play at 1B or DH in the major leagues. Some teams will go for more contact guys, not all 1B's are big power guys but that is their challenge.

Gage Stanifer had his best start of the season. He gave up one hit and two runs in 4.1 innings with the runs scoring after he left the game. He struck out six. On the less good side he walked three and needed 84 pitches, 47 strikes and 37 balls. He needs to cut down the number of balls as his next challenge.

Mason Olson followed Stanifer it looks like he is being stretched out. The lefty made his second appearance on Thursday and threw 3.2 innings with five K's.

Jose Berrios gave up five runs in his first rehab start for Dunedin. Nolan Perry later struck out 12 hitters over five innings. The statcast feed went down during the game so we don't have metrics other than he generated 16 whiffs on 29 swings. Other than the strikeouts, he gave up one hit and didn't walk anyone.

Dariel Ramon, generally a light hitter, his a three run home run for the D Jays before later being ejected from the game. Juan Sanchez picked up his first hit in five trips, no strikeouts. Blaine Bullard was not so good, he struck out four times. Jojo Parker doubled and walked.

Like Perry, Daniel Guerra had a fine game for Vancouver. He struck out eleven in five innings, no hits, two walks. But most of the excitement was on the hitting side.

The C's came into the ninth inning trailing by two runs. Carter Cunningham, who else, hit a two run home run to tie the game. Then in the tenth Tucker Toman hit a grand slam home run to get the win for Vancouver. The homer was his third hit of the game, Maddox Latta also had three including a home run off the first pitch of the night.

Arjun Nimalla was 0-4 and is now hitting .152. He has ten strikeouts and eight walks in 33 AB's. His BABIP is .182 so you could say he is unlucky, or you could say he is being pitched into weak contact by throwing him breaking balls away. I am not sure which it is.

Going back to last year, Nimmala's issue really seems to be pitch selection. Hes being too passive, almost looking for the walk rather than being aggressive early. He's ignoring good pitches early on, getting into pitcher's counts and then swinging at less than ideal pitches. It seems to be very mental with him.

I’ve been saying since last summer that there is something fundamentally wrong right now with his approach at the plate. I don’t know whether you would call it pitch selection or pitch recognition. His strike zone control is good (ie he isn’t a hacker swinging wildly at pitches out of the zone). He has good contact ability (ie he can get to pitches in all areas in the zone). However he seems to have zero sense of what pitches he can actually do damage with or not. So many ABs end with him hitting a “pitcher’s pitch”. I don’t know if it’s fatal but this isn’t just a slump.

Latta seems like another guy to keep an eye on - an undrafted free agent last year as a senior out of Cal State Fullerton, he's showing decent contact skills and good plate discipline. He didn't have much power in college, but with a couple home runs already perhaps he's added some strength.

yeah i was surprised to see Latta getting some spring training games in but it looks like they might be right to see something in him.

Ligon injured while warming up to start the Dunedin game...

McAdoo with two no-doubt homers in the double-header.

McAdoo might be a better option than Okamoto already.

I was really impressed with McAdoo in Spring Training. He looked capable at 3B and he offers a bit of everything offensively (including some base running for a corner infielder).
