Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports the Blue Jays have demoted Kyle Drabek to AAA Las Vegas.  Getting the call to the bigs is fellow righty Zach Stewart from AA New Hampshire.  A tip of the cap to Bauxite smcs for the heads up.  The linked story from above also features audio from general manager Alex Anthopoulos about Drabek's demotion.

Brett Lawrie's timetable to reach the bigs has been pushed back again.  After initial reports that he suffered only a bruise when he was hit in the hand by a pitch from Tucson's Anthony Bass last week, The National Post reports the pride of Langley, B.C. is expected to miss at least two to three weeks with a broken bone in his hand.  Hat tip to Bauxite dan gordon for the heads up.

Brett Lawrie was hitting .354/.415/.677 with Triple-A Las Vegas at the time of his injury to go along with 15 home runs, 49 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases.

ESPN New York has reported that the greatest catcher in the history of MLB in Canada, former Montreal Expo Gary  "The Kid" Carter, was diagnosed today with four small brain tumors.


The Blue Jays have placed Jesse Litsch on the 15-day DL with right shoulder impingement, retroactive to May 19. He'll miss two turns in the rotation. Carlos Villanueva will spot start Monday at Yankee Stadium, and if he makes it through five innings there I will be hugely impressed. And rejoice, for the eight-man bullpen is in remission: Mike McCoy has been called up to take Litsch's place. McCoy should be on the Jays' bench today.

Mel Queen died today at the age of 69. Queen served four years as the Jays pitching coach, from 1996-1999 (and as interim manager for five games), and during that span Toronto pitchers won three consecutive Cy Young Awards. Prior to that he served as the Jays Director of Player Development for 6 seasons. Perhaps most famously, Queen is known as the man who reinvented Roy Halladay’s delivery and helping to turn Halladay into the pitcher he is today.He served last year as senior advisor in the player development system. Queen pitched in the majors for the Reds and Angels between 1964 and 1972.
