Teach your children well
Their father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick's the one you'll know by

Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

Today's song isn't supposed to be difficult to guess. It is, by request and with our deepest condolences, dedicated to Jeff, Hannah and Landen Geauvreau, in memory of Yvonne, their beloved wife and mom.

After one of the most disappointing games of the Season From HellTM, the news for Jays fans this morning, while not tragic by any means, is certainly bleak. Even as one vital cog was restored to the misfiring Toronto machine, another may be in need of repair. Any positives, like Vernon's 3-for-3 in his earlier-than-expected return, and Hinske extending his hit streak to 14 games, were overshadowed by the dark cloud surrounding the ace.

  1. From the keyboard of Spencer Fordin, Halladay fatigued as Jays fall. Many armchair physicians have already made their diagnoses; Doc, while admitting a problem, still contends it isn't serious.

  2. Fordin Notes: Wells makes his return. It's good news/bad news for Cat, who has "hockey groin" and will need offseason surgery, but can't make it any worse by returning to the lineup soon.

  3. In the Star, Mark Zwolinski's Carlos says no to Jays quotes Delgado as saying, "the circus is over" -- for himself and in the clubhouse. Barring an offer that sweeps his agent off his feet, the best Blue Jay ever is staying put for the rest of this season. Now, if only he can get his stroke back, and people stop robbing him of doubles like Dellucci did last night.

  4. Halladay sputters again as Rangers pound Blue Jays -- Zwolinski speculates, "the underlying problem, one not denied by the club, is that Halladay is suffering from a possible micro tear of one of the four muscle groups that join up in the shoulder area."

  5. From the Globe, in Halladay experiences rough outing in Texas, Jeff Blair says Doc "has done nothing to ease some of the whispers that his health is less than 100 per-cent."

  6. The Sun, not always the quickest to update its Web site, has the AP gamer by Stephen Hawkins: Jays, Halladay hammered.

Not being an experienced rounder-upper, I probably missed a few relevant items, so if you find any, please link to them, especially if they inspire optimism.

The Jays STILLS have holes in their lineup. They could do with players with abilities like Bobby CROSBY or the hustle of basketballer Steve NASH. Perhaps they should even add some more YOUNG players, as certain other teams did back in the 70s.

Kieran wins 500,000 points, adjusted for inflation (one for everyone who was at a certain 1969 concert I woulda, coulda, shoulda attended) and this animated GIF of Woodstock:

I hope the Jays get Halladay thoroughly checked out, and soon. Of course, Doc isn't going to admit that anything is seriously wrong. For one thing, pitchers have to deal with pain all the time. And pitchers, especially top-flight ones such as Doc, are intensely competitive - you have to use a team of mules to drag them off the mound.

The TV commentators last night were speculating that something is definitely wrong, and the stats bear this out: this month, Doc has only fanned 10 batters in 17.0 innings, which is far below his usual norm. Given that the Jays have invested roughly one squillion dollars in his future, they owe it to themselves to ensure that he is not endangering his future.

Optimism was hard to find in the minor league report too. I kept running into pictures of George Bush kissing babies in West Virginia, not that there's anything wrong with kissing babies, but you know what I mean. Better than that are baseball "babies" who can pitch. I present to you Pulaski's Derek Tate, who did just that last night.

Words from "Teach your children" are printed underneath the picture of me, scrubbed and long-haired, in my 1976 high-school yearbook. I did indeed look dazed and confused.

It hurts me inside to think of Jeff's loss, so...

...has there ever been a group with more talent than Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young? I mean, ONE of the members, a certain Neil Young, split off and made at least fifty jillion dollars since then.

Son, sit down -- there was this little band called the Beatles.

CSNY, bah. Beatles, who dey? Never been a more talented collection of musicians in one group than Spinal Tap. It's an outrage that none of them were in the "We Are The World" video.

Perhaps they were afraid the drummer would explode during the taping.

With all due respect to the Beatles, they were not head-and-shoulders above every other band before and since in terms of talent. There have been people and bands who were more talented, even. What they did have was timing; the Beatles occurred just when the market was ready for them.

It's a lot like the pitcher with awesome stuff who just can't harness it (the Escobar effect). You need everything to go right for someone who is ridiculously talented to become ridiculously rich and famous.

If there is any chance of structural damage to Halladay's arm, then obviously they need to get it checked out. But I am amused by some of the newspaper writers, talking about Halladay as if he is a steam engine or something.

Zwolinski: "...there doesn't appear to be any sense in pitching Halladay until his health concerns are cleared up."

Blair: "Halladay is 7-7 and has done nothing to ease some of the whispers that his health is less than 100 per-cent."

Guys, he's a PITCHER. His arm is supposed to hurt. It's always going to be less then 100%. It's unrealistic to expect him to feel perfectly healthy for his entire career.

Carlton, Gibson, Ryan, Palmer, etc. pitched for years with sore, stiff, aching arms. They lasted as long as they did with training regimens that became more rigourous as they aged, and developed new exercises to deal with new aching pains.

Whether Halladay needs rest, or some new exercises or the surgeon's knife, I have no idea. Doc's comments, that he "feels no pain" but that something's "not right" are very ambiguous.

"Have you ever thrown a ball 100 miles an hour? Everything hurts. Even your ass hurts. I see pictures of my face and say, 'Holy shit', but that's the strain you feel when you throw." - Bob Gibson

Bands like Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd represent a great collection of talent while the artists are with the band, but the solo careers didn't amount to much. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, as it were.

Does anyone remember the late 80s, during which time there was talk of supergroups that would/could be formed as a result of The Traveling Wilburys experiment (which ended shortly after Roy Orbison's death).

Wait a sec. Tonight is a 7:00 CDT start, and tomorrow is also a night game? Don't the Jays have to fly all the way to Oakland overnight Sunday and then sleep Monday morning before the game, at what would be 8:00 their time (their personal time, i.e jet lag)?

Man, I got jet lag taking the VIA train to Montreal. Arlington to Oakland is rather...far, no?

It sounds as if Halladay's arm feels different from how he's accustomed to it feeling, and he hasn't figured out yet how to deal with it.

Which is something most pitchers go through at least three times during three careers. So as long as there's no actual injury, I'm not worried. Doc will work it out.

Actually, I liked Buffalo Springfield better than CSNY.

I'll take the May-Mercury pairing in Queen over Lennon-McCartney or any two members of CSNY any day.

The most underrated award has to go to Partridge-Moulding of XTC.
