The #BlueJays affiliates won three of four Tuesday. Buffalo and New Hampshire are off due to the All-Star break. Lansing and Vancouver had the day off. The DSL Blue Jays were rained out.

Dunedin 6 Clearwater 0

David Jacob went deep, drew a walk and was plunked. Riley Adams and Rodrigo Orozco had two hits each with Orozco driving in a pair of runs. Brock Lundquist had a double and an RBI and is hitting .524 so far.

Connor Eller permitted just five hits and a hit by pitch over 5-2/3 innings of shutout ball. He struck out four and divided his 10 outs in play evenly on the ground and in the air. Jonathan Cheshire stranded two runners on the way to two shutout innings and Jackson McClelland racked up three K's in getting the last four outs.

Princeton 6 Bluefield 4

A two-run triple by D.J. Neal and a two-run double by Hagen Danner in the first did not hold up as the Rays broke a 4-4 tie with runs in their final two at-bats. Neal, Cal Stevenson, Dominic Abbadessa and Rafael Lantigua all had two hits on the night with Stevenson and Abbadessa stealing a base. Stevenson also had a walk.

Claudio Galva gave up four runs (three earned) in six innings on eight hits and a walk. He served up two homers but struck out four and got nine outs on the dirt. Adams Cuevas gave up two runs on five hits over the final two frames for the loss.

GCL Blue Jays 11 GCL Braves 0

The Jays pulled away in this one by scoring in their final four at-bats, including a six-run eighth. Leonardo Jimenez, Hector Guerrero, Joseph Reyes and Addison Barger all had a couple of hits apiece. Reyes homered while Jimenez doubled and drove in three. Dalton Pompey was 0-for-2 with a walk before being replaced. Jordan Groshans was 0-for-5.

Juan Diaz gave up a hit and a walk and struck out five over six shutout innings for the win. The outfield was kept busy by Diaz as they caught nine of the 12 outs put into play. Williams Moreno struck out two over two innings and Luis Alvarez worked the ninth to keep the run of bagels going on the linescore.

The two teams also finished off a June 30 game in which the G-Jays prevailed 7-5 in 12 innings. Run-scoring doubles by Warnel Valdez and Steward Berroa were the difference. Nicolas Medina surrendered an unearned run over four frames for the win. Gaudy Ramirez got the save with two strikeouts in the 12th.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Cal Stevenson, Bluefield

Bluefield has a couple of OF sleepers performing well in DJ Neal - a 26th rounder in 2017, and Dominic Abbadessa, a 23rd rounder out of HS in 2016.  Both have played plenty of CF, although Neal has been in RF this year so presumably Abbadessa has the better glove. Neal is no slouch though, as a former football player he has elite athleticism to go with plus speed, range and arm (from Jay Blue's prospect guide).  Fangraphs has his speed score at 9.3 - since 7 is an excellent, clearly it's a small sample size ... anyone have an opinion on the utility of this stat?
Abbadessa's only 17 for 28 in SB attempts but he's apparently even faster, and has a fantastic defensive reputation.

Even more promising than those two is Hagen Danner, who was reported to be a completely different hitter in Spring Training and so far, the results have been good.  Developing him as a catcher was a surprise move for some who thought he'd go the pitching route - he's got 3 pitches that project as major league average and low-90s stuff.  We nabbed him in the 2nd round although he might have slipped to get to us, but he's such a volatile prospect as a HS catcher / pitcher, with his tough first year he seems a bit off the radar.

Bluefield has some really exciting talent right now, including Otto Lopez, Luis De Los Santos and Davis Schneider.   Pardinho is on another level - I thought MLP pipeline was high on him at 7th in the org, but the kid is top 5 right now, easily, and potentially a top 100 prospect in the game by the end of the year.

Will be interesting to see what kind of roster the
Jays put in Lansing next year. Should be a great thread and interesting conversation, so many options

Agreed Mendocino. The younger position players in Bluefield are outplaying the older ones. As well in the GCL G Moreno, J Groshans and L Jimenez are outstanding.

Milb.com has Chavez Young at ss and Kevin Vicuna in rf tonight. A mixup or Lugnut experimentation?
jerjapan - Wednesday, July 11 2018 @ 09:26 PM EDT (#361638) #
Ha.  the org really does have a SS fetish it seems.  Russ Martin!  Chavez Young!  who's next?

Murphy is a legit prospect.  He's only just turned 23, but as a HS draftee, it feels like he's been around forever.  Drafted in the 3rd round in 2013, he had all of 4 IP until 2016 due to injury.  He looks like a back of rotation guy, but if he keeps pitching like this, he will be added to the 40 man.  He was eligible last year and a candidate to be chosen, but likely just too far away from the bigs at that point to be selected, or else lacking in stuff ... it seems that many rule v pitching selections bring a lot of velocity.

Murphy is the poor man's Ryan Borucki.

Winkowski starting to look like something....anyone have anything on him?
jerjapan - Thursday, July 12 2018 @ 01:12 AM EDT (#361641) #
Winkowski....
Yup.  Ugly, he's had four good starts this year, after 2 crap years, although he's always been young for the league, and only just turned 20.  His name has never been previously spoken on the box before.

just what is your sample size for a pitcher becoming a prospect, anyway?  Justin Dillon was almost in your top FIFTEEN earlier this season, after that freak run in Buffalo.

5 now for winkowski.

may have jumped the gun on Dillon but i saw enough good in his track record to make his dominant AAA stint legit interesting, and put him in the convo with other borderline top 15 guys pre-draft. of course now he's had his first awful stint in AA now, unfortunately.

And yeah, other than obvious top talents I have no qualms about prospects rising or falling quickly. and a pitcher dominating all the way up in AAA can realistically be a safer bet than some ok prospect in A ball in short order.

but back to winkowski - imo he's been the only standout pitcher in Vancouver this year.

jerjapan - Patrick Murphy has maybe the best curveball in the system and a low to mid 90's FB with excellent downward plane, so longballs have been few and far between. His issues, other than health, have been command and a lack of an average 3rd pitch (changeup) coming into the season.

It was a mixup.  The boxscore now has Young in right and Vicuna at shortstop.

Noda had 2 doubles and a triple last night.  He's now slashing .260/.424/.480.  I am very curious about how he will do at higher levels.

It is too bad that nobody advanced the topic that Mendocino suggested. That being the make up of next years Lansing roster. Pardhino and Winckowski would be potential aces on that team.
uglyone - Thursday, July 12 2018 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#361653) #
it's a tough topic. so many possibilities.

All these guys could be there, though:

CF Abbadessa
RF Contreras
LF Lopez
3B DeLosSantos
SS Groshans
2B Taylor
1B Kirk
C Danner
DH Conine
UT Schneider

SP Pardinho
SP Kloffenstein
SP Castillo
SP Winckowski

You picked the cream of the crop UO. I would be very happy if Kloffenstein made that team out of ST. I also definitely would add Leo Jimenez.
