Dave Stieb was named to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame a couple of weeks ago, and that seemed a good enough reason to look back at one of the greatest Blue Jays of them all.

Those of you not old enough to have seen him in his prime, from 1981 through 1985: trust me. You really missed something. No one else quite like him.

The Carlos Delgado Sweepstakes has finally ended, some six weeks after the Jays had to bow out. ESPN reports that Carlos will now be taking aim at the rightfield seats at the newly-renamed Dolphins Stadium; the deal is with the Florida Marlins for four years at $52 million, plus a vesting option. Considering the contract he ultimately signed, it would have taken one heck of a hometown discount for the Jays to have landed their all-time leading slugger this offseason.

The Baltimore Orioles announced today that they have signed Chris Gomez to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training.

It's a sad departure for me, at least, because Gomez proved me wrong in spades, with a fine year as a Blue Jays infielder. I was hoping he'd stick around, but the Jays obviously had other priorities.

Ken Caminiti, former Astro, Padre, Brave and Ranger, has passed away from heart failure at the age of 41, according to

Caminiti was a three-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. He was the 1996 National League MVP after leading the Padres to the NL West title.
The Canadian Press reports that John Cerutti was found dead in his hotel room Sunday morning.

No details of the death have been given at this time.

We at Batters Box pass on our condolences to John's friends and family. This is shocking and horrible news.

Lurch, the athlete-turned-ballplayer, was impossible not to root for, and at times nearly impossible to watch. I hope he can consolidate himself in Tampa Bay; he's a hard worker and nice fellow, and if he can learn to trust his stuff and avoid getting too predictable, he still may have some success.
