Ken Caminiti, former Astro, Padre, Brave and Ranger, has passed away from heart failure at the age of 41, according to ESPN.com.
Caminiti was a three-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. He was the 1996 National League MVP after leading the Padres to the NL West title.
Today's games:
1:00PM EST Atlanta (Ortiz) at Houston (Clemens)
4:00PM EST St. Louis (Suppan) at L.A. (Perez)
Houston and St. Louis each lead 2 games to 1.
Two teams - the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Dodgers - face elimination today.
Atlanta and Houston are tied and although the Astros are at home, neither Clemens nor Oswalt takes the mound today. Should the Astros lose, will Garner start Clemens and Oswalt on short rest in Games 4 and 5?
Minnesota will almost certainly send Johan Santana to the mound today and Brad Radke tomorrow in New York if the Twins win Game 4. Both will be starting on short rest, but that's the only realistic hope Minnesota has. So far the series has been eerily similar to last year's ALDS.
Yesterday, it looked like an easy win for the Red Sox until Mike Timlin walked Darin Erstad after getting to a 1-2 count. He then grooved a pitch to Vladdy who tied the game. David Ortiz was the extra-inning hero - he hit a 2-run walkoff homerun off surprise reliever Jarrod Washburn to sink the Angels.
Collectively, Da Box got this one wrong.
50.0% Twins in 5
30.0% Yankees in 5
17.0% Yankees in 4
13.0% Twins in 4
If you were to believe what you read in Batters Box recently there is no hope for the Blue Jays. The low payroll dooms the team to eternal mediocrity. JP's signing and trading record is poor. There is no-one to replace Delgado. There is no-one to replace Hinske, and on and on. Several posters have suggested they do not see how the Jays can escape last place. Just remember the old saying "you are never as bad as you look when you are down". So what is the blueprint for success on a low payroll? Does JP have a plan? Is the light at the end of the tunnel a train?
Yes, it's playoff time again and time for a totally unrelated, almost completely non-baseball-related Batter's Box contest... the BBPSOBWTRCC.
Just sits at home and rolls her spastic eyes
But every weekend through the door
Come words of wisdom from the world outside
Bronson Arroyo starts for Boston against the Angels and Kelvim Escobar this afternoon. The Bosox lead the series 2-0.
In the night game, Kevin Brown and the Yankees take on Carlos Silva and the Twins. The series is tied 1-1.
TSN reports that Po-Hsuan Keng, a 20-year-old righthanded pitcher from the Chinese Taipei Olympic squad, has signed with the Blue Jays.
Welcome aboard, Po-Hsuan!
Recently we looked at the questions "
What Can We Expect From a 14th Overall Draft Pick?" and "
What Can We Expect From a 15th Overall Draft Pick?" Now that we know that the Jays will be picking 6th overall in next year's draft the question on everyone's mind is "What Can We Expect From a 6th Overall Draft Pick?"
Dick Scott, the Blue Jays’ Director of Player Development, spoke to us by telephone from Florida. He was in the Sunshine State making sure the Instructional League was operating smoothly -- a challenge this year, thanks to some decidedly un-sunny weather.
When we spoke, Scott was just getting back to baseball after a three-day break caused by Hurricane Jeanne, which damaged the Jays’ Dunedin facility in addition to creating general inconveniences like power outages and flooding. Jeanne hit Dunedin harder than the other hurricanes this season.
What a season! The Fisher Cats first season was a resounding success, as they caught fire in July and August, and stormed to an Eastern League title.

Whose wine, what wine, where the hell did I dine?
Must have been a dream I don't believe where I've been
The National League is in action today. The Braves seek to rebound from the thumping they took in game 1, but Roy Oswalt will be a tough nut to crack. They'll need to play great defence and a solid effort from Mike Hampton to win.
Tonight, it's Jeff Weaver's turn to take a stroll through Assasins' Alley. Look for the Sea of Red to win another one and for Eric Gagne to have a tuneup inning at the end of the game.
First in a three-part series.
Although my magnum opus -- okay, mildly interesting account -- of the greatest postseason games in baseball history remains a work in progress, I've decided to pen some shorter, more concise articles in the meantime.
After the Santana-Mussina matchup last night, I thought I'd snap up a list of the top ten pitching duels in Division Series history.
